Well, first of all: what is pride?

A 30-year old Webster’s dictionary defines the word “pride” as:

  • noun > 1 : the quality or state of being proud as a: excessive self-esteem (conceit), b a reasonable or justifiable self-respect, c pleasure or satisfaction taken in some act, accomplishment, or possession 2 : proud or disdainful behaviour or treatment (disdain) 3 : something that is or is fit to be a source of pride (i.e. this pup is the pride of the litter) 4 : a company of lions [Old English pryde from prud (proud)]

Strong’s Concordance (Hebrew) defines the word “pride” as:

  • H1346 arrogance or majesty; by implication (concretely) ornament:— excellency, haughtiness, highness, pride, proudness, swelling
  • H1347 arrogancy, excellency, excellent, majesty, pomp pride, proud, swelling

Strong’s Concordance (Greek) defines the word “pride” as:

  • G212 braggodocio , i.e. (by implication) self-confidence:— boasting, pride
  • G5187 to envelope with smoke (i.e. figuratively) to inflate with self-conceit:— high-minded, be lifted up with pride, be proud

In my view? Pride is a sin because believing that one’s talents and/or accomplishments are something other than gifts from God will put them on a path which will end far, far away from Him: that is, you’ll “forget” Him.

When we get so “puffed up” with our accomplishments that we don’t realize it’s God who deserves the credit for our talents … we insult Him. Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Thank you @JT4TheReturn
