In the middle of a shitty pandemic that is crushingly depressing, we felt the need to tap into our Christmas spirit a little early this year. Time to make some seriously-delicious, snack food; a generations-long, Christmas tradition in our family.

Step 1: Ensure that you have the ingredients

  • 1 package of General Foods Cheerios* cereal (525 grams)
  • 1 package of Kellogg’s Crispix* cereal (365 grams) Some people use Shreddies but I like Crispix better
  • 2 packages of FritoLay’s Rold Gold pretzel sticks (400 grams each)
  • 2 cups of no-name mixed nuts (make it as nutty as you want)
  • 2 cups of no-name canola oil (or peanut oil or vegetable oil)
  • 3 tablespoons of Lea Perrins Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 teaspoons of no-name garlic salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons of Club House celery salt

*I actually use a bit more Chrispix and a bit less Cheerios.

Step 2: Combine the dry ingredients » In a large bowl, mix together the cereals, the nuts and the pretzel sticks. Then, pour the mixture into a 2-inch deep, metal or glass baking pan.

Step 3: Prepare the deliciously-seasoned sauce » In a large measuring cup, whisk together the oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt and celery salt.

Step 4: Pour the deliciously-seasoned sauce over the combined dry ingredients and stir it all up as demonstrated in this short video.

Homemade Nuts & Bolts

Should they be more than just a Christmas Tradition?

Step 5: Place your creation into an oven which has been preheated to 250°F for 2.5 hours; stirring the mixture after one hour.

Step 6: Let cool and then devour!

Step 7: If there is any left, this delicious snack keeps very well in containers and can be stored in the freezer for a couple months. Yum!!

Step 8: When you get the chance, replenish your pantry for when you decide to make more!

We are grateful to high-profile Ottawa lawyer Michael Spratt* for sharing his family’s recipe; viewable now at pfi.ROCKS Living! Magazine: FOOD section.

*Even if he refused to represent Deirdre Moore as her defense attorney after he realized [?she was one of the Ottawa Syndicate’s Targeted Individuals?]; not unlike another high-profile Ottawa lawyer: Paul Champ.

Happy 15th birthday to my beautiful daughter Cate Kiska, an extraordinary baker and chef since she was old enough to wear an apron!
