More Than a Carpenter

Cover: More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell and Sean McDowell

(Introduction) This 178-page book is sectioned into 13 chapters and has an excellent bibliography; but, what interested me most during my quick read were the pages1 that claimed that the “address” of the Messiah was prophesied throughout the Old Testament (“OT”) and could be none other than Jesus Christ.

It references eight New Testament (“NT”) verses when The Messiah “appealed to OT prophesies to substantiate his claims”:

  • Galatians 4:4
  • Luke 24:27, 24:44
  • John 5:46, 8:56
  • Acts 3:18, 17:2-3
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Then, it references another (insert count) OT verses that identify the who, the what, the where, the when and the how of The Messiah’s “address”. The why? That’s revealed in the NT with another two.

I have extracted the authors’ (insert count) scriptural references and [represented] them here with quotes from various Biblical sources.

1 See pages 143-146

2 versus, the serpent’s seed (ie. Seth)

3 see exposé “The Seed Wars” distributed by YouTuber “The Protoevangelium”

4 Note that the authors omitted the 8 births between Seth and Shem; and, the 8 births between Shem and Abraham.

Jacob was given a new name “Israel” (see ); hence, the 12 tribes of Israel are simply Jacob’s descendants.

The 12 tribes of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin, Dan, Asher, Gad, Naphtali, Levi

7 Also, Mary was born of two tribes: Judah (paternal) and Levi (maternal).

8 Note that the authors omitted lineage from Judas to Jesse (ie. Phares, Esrom, Aram, Aminadab, Naasson, Salmon, Booz and Obed; as well as the 42 additional births that occurred to produce The Messiah (according to Appendix 99 of the KJV Bible Companion copied with permission here: )).

(Start of column 2)

The Who

The Messiah would result from a virgin birth:

The What

The Messiah would be from a specific bloodline:

  • from “the seed of a woman”2,3 (Genesis 3:15)
  • Messiah would be from Shem (Genesis 9, 10)4
  • “[Blessed families would be from Abraham]” (Genesis 12:1-3, x; Genesis 17:1-8, x; Genesis 22:15-18, x)

  • ”[Isaac’s Jacob5 would be selected over Esau]” (Genesis 28:1-4, x; Genesis 35:10-12, x; Numbers 24:17, x)
  • Of Israel’s 12 tribes6, the tribe of Judah would be selected. While there is no scripture that specifically makes this claim, [?no other tribe bore a son named Jesse?] (see below).7
  • Of Judah’s tribe, the family of Jesse would be selected (Isaiah 11:1-5, x)8
  • Of Jesse’s family, the house of David would be selected (2 Samuel 7:12-16, x; Jeremiah 23:5, x)

  • ”…” (Daniel 9:26, x)
  • ”…” (Zechariah 11:13)
  • ”…” (Haggai 2:7-9)

(Note that the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.)

The Hows

How He would have a “forerunner”:

  • “…” (Isaiah 40:3-5 x,
  • “…” (Malachi 3:1, x)

How He would be rejected by his own people (the Jews) and accepted by the Gentiles:

  • “…” (Psalm 22:7-8, x;
  • ”…” (Psalm 118:22)
  • ”…” (Isaiah 8:14, 49:6, 50:6, 52:13-15)

How He would be betrayed (by a friend, for 30 pieces of silver that would be cast on the Temple floor):

  • Psalm 41.9
  • Zechariah 11:12-13

as noted by Saint Matthew at his NT Matthew 27:3-10.

  • Psalm: 22:6-18

  • (NT) Galatians 3:13

* … in 1012 BC … 800 years before crucifixion was used as a method of execution

The Why

Promises of new heart/spirit and new person/life at:

  • Ezekiel 36:26
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17

(Note the definitions of Psyche (Greek) and Nephesh (Hebrew) which provide additional insight into the true meanings of the words “spirit” and “soul”.)
