From Flagstaff, I’d use Route 66 to “Forest Service Road” 231 (the 535 is very bumpy and required me to slow down to 10 m.p.h. (or less)).

Peace Outfitters can rent you any camping gear you need. I wanted to stay overnight to check out the starts, but, it’s only about 75 minutes from Flagstaff so it could easily fit into someone’s day trip.

Flagstaff Car Rentals rents SUVs; although, the 231 is paved so (given my sunny, Autumn drive there and back) I probably could have used any decent car. <3
